About Our Church History

First

The First Union Baptist Church was founded on June 12, 1921, in the United Sons and Daughters Hall in Guyton, Effingham County, Georgia. The founding was led by Rev. Fred D. McGee, Rev. G.W. Bailey, and Rev. B.J. Hawkins, marking the beginning of its storied history. On that inaugural day, Rev. B.J. Hawkins had the honor of presenting the first hymn, while Rev. Freeman Lanier from New Hope A.M.E. Church delivered the opening prayer.

Union

The service saw Rev. Hawkins introducing Rev. F.D. McGee as the events speaker. Rev. McGee chose a poignant Scripture for the occasion, reading from John 14, "Let not your
heart be troubled," and selected hymn #238, "Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone?" for the congregation to sing. He then delivered a sermon based on Judges 7:18, emphasizing "The Sword of the Lord and of Gideon," At this time W.M. Dunn was installed as the very first Pastor of First Union Baptist Church.

Baptist

Now, more than a century later, the First Union Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to 103 years of devotion to God and service to the community. Under the leadership of Pastor Tommy L. China Sr., the church has further cemented its role as a
pivotal community pillar. First Union Missionary Baptist Church prides itself on being a church for the community, rather than merely being in the community. Upholding the belief that "Everybody is Somebody," the church emphasizes inclusivity and equality, ensuring there are no "big I's or little U's" among its congregation. This ethos captures the essence of First Union as a place of worship that welcomes and values every individual.
